Merlot is harvested from five separate hillside locations on the Truchard Estate Vineyard. The differences in soil, exposure, and temperature at each site combine to produce unique growing conditions for the grapes. As a result, the wines from these hillsides each have their own identity, and each contributes different characteristics to the final blend. The vines range from 18 - 40 years old. Cabernet Franc, grown in adjacent areas of the vineyard is added in to provide additional softness, structure, and complexity.
Rich aromas of black cherry, pomegranate, and wild strawberry; with hints of rhubarb, tea, and earth. The mouth is silky; with flavors of cranberry, ripe plum, and sweet vanilla. Firm acidity and delicate tannins focus the palate and provide a lingering finish of spice and red fruit.
Chardonnay is located throughout the southern part of the Truchard Estate Vineyard. The vines range from 20 - 42 years old and benefit from the various marine soils, gently sloped terrain, and cooler temperatures - conditions that make the Carneros region ideal for growing Chardonnay. They produce aromatic wines with tropical fruit characteristics and a unique spicy element.
This white varietal has been traditionally associated with the Northern Rhone, where it is blended with Marsanne to make white Hermitage wines. In 1998, three acres of Roussanne were planted on the southern end of the Truchard Estate Vineyard. Growing in soils composed of volcanic rock and ash, the vines benefit from the gently sloped terrain and cooler Carneros temperatures. Roussanne is a challenging grape in both the vineyard and winery. However, when done correctly it can produce an aromatic and delicate wine with the structure and finesse to age.
Tempranillo is the noble grape of Spain, and we found that mimicking the long bottle aging techniques of Spain prior to release allow us to enhance the flavors and textures of our Tempranillo.
The 2015 vintage was one of the earliest harvests on record! A very dry winter forced early bud-break. Cool spring conditions during flowering led to poor set; yields were down almost 40%. Moderate summer temperatures quickly brought the small crop to full maturity. The wines of 2015 are powerful and concentrated, yet elegant.
Cabernet Sauvignon is the only wine produced by Truchard Vineyards with a “reserve” designation. It is a very limited bottling that is a tribute to the quality of this unique vineyard.
The “Old Block” Pinot Noir is the oldest block of Pinot Noir on the Truchard Estate Vineyard. Planted in 1974 on St. George rootstock, these “Martini” selection vines have taken full advantage of the thin soils, rolling hills, and cooler temperatures of the region. They are some of the oldest vines in Carneros. This perfectly balanced vineyard consistently produces a crop of little clusters with small berries. The resulting wine exhibits an intensity, texture, and complexity that only mature vines can deliver.
There are 12 acres of Syrah planted on the Truchard Estate Vineyard. Four acres are in the “Highlands” region to the north, and 8 acres are located at the southern end of the vineyard. These areas are dominated by austere hillsides composed of volcanic rock and ash.
In 2000, one acre of Petit Verdot was planted in an isolated valley on the Truchard Estate Vineyard. The vines grow in a light sandstone soil on a steep hillside. In the cooler Carneros climate these grapes ripen slowly, allowing for maximum flavor development. The resulting wine is dark purple, with floral aromas, and an intense fruity flavor.
There are only 4 acres of Zinfandel planted on the Truchard Estate Vineyard. One acre is in the northern “Highlands” region, and three acres are located at the southern end of the vineyard. The vines range from 18 to 26 years old and grow on steep hillsides composed of volcanic rock and ash. The porous soils and cooler Carneros climate combine to produce an exceptionally intense Zin, with unique fruit and spice components.
